Chocolate M&M Cookies

Well, hello there.

For awhile now, I’ve been looking for a new cookie recipe to add to my starting line-up.  These, dear friends, have made the cut.  Chewy, chocolatey, cheery M&M’s, a topping of flakey sea salt–what’s not to love here?

I came across this recipe on one of my favorite food blogs, Crepes of Wrath.  Have you been to this site?  Fantastic photography and awesome food.  I only made a few small tweaks to her recipe, which you’ll see below.  And, as always, you’ll also find nutrition info down at the bottom.

Chocolate Swirl M&M Cookies Sprinkled with Fleur de Sel
Makes about 3 ½ dozen

½ cup butter, melted
¼ cup Crisco
1 cup packed light brown sugar
½ cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
¾ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ cups M&M’s
1 ½ cups semi sweet chocolate chips, chopped
fleur de sel (sea salt) for sprinkling

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat together your butter, Crisco, and sugars on medium-high speed for 1 minute.  Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla.  Beat for another minute.  In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt and then add this to your butter/egg mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined.  Fold in the chopped chocolate and M&M’s.

Using a small scoop or two spoons, drop walnut-sized balls of cookie dough onto your cookie sheets.  Bake for 8-10 minutes until lightly browned around the edges and the tops look dry (as opposed to doughy).  Mine were ready in 8 minutes.  Also, I like to bake one sheet at a time, as the cookies seem to bake more evenly this way, but do as you like.  Once out of the oven, sprinkle the tops with fleur de sel and then allow the cookies to sit on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to cooling racks.  Enjoy!
